| ||Greenwood became known as a leading rail center and textile manufacturer in the state during its early history. At one time, nine railroad tracks crossed through the city's central business district, but as rail declined as a means of daily travel, fewer and fewer trains made their way through Uptown Greenwood until rail operations ceased in 1982. That early rail infrastructure, however, was a main reason for the flourishing of textile manufacturing in the town. |
Greenwood is best known now for its annual Festival of Flowers, which began in 1968 and takes place each June. Though it attracts flower enthusiasts from across the nation, the festival is more than just a standard flower show. The festival includes jazz concerts, Cessna flights for children, a classic car showcase, an assortment of world foods, and even a dog show. The festival also includes a medical symposium hosted by Self Regional Healthcare, which began life in 1951 as Self Regional Hospital, one of the most advanced hospitals in the country at the time of its construction.
Greenwood hosts another annual event, the Festival of Discovery, on the second weekend of July. This event features a number of significant elements of Upstate culture, including its rich food heritage (particularly Greenwood's famous black kettle hash) and Blues tradition.
