Fall Car Care Tips in Greenville, SC

The days are getting shorter. The weather is cooling down. The dog days of summer have passed, meaning it's time for autumn. No matter if you love or hate the fall season, it's a great time of year to do some maintenance on your car. Winter can be harsh on it, so it's important to prepare your vehicle. We've put together a list of tips to help you care for your car this season, so keep reading to learn more!

Top 4 Fall Tips

1. Tire Tread and Pressure

Dropping temperatures can cause tires to lose up to one pound of pressure for every 10-degree Fahrenheit drop. If you don't know the correct tire pressure for your car, be sure to check your owner's manual. Currently sporting summer tires on your vehicle? Consider switching them out for all-season tires. If you don't need to switch out for new tires, you should at least check the tread depth of your tires. Simply use the penny method by placing a penny into the tread grooves. If most of Lincoln's head shows, your treads are less than the recommended 2/32” of tread depth (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).

2. Battery

Another important step in preparing your car for winter is to check the battery. Cold weather can wear down your car's battery. Also, be sure to check the connections – they should be tight, clean and free of corrosion. If you're unsure of the battery, get it tested; if it's more than three years old, it might be time to replace it. Nobody wants any surprise battery failures while on the road!

3. Heating and Cooling

While having heat in your car during the colder months is important for driver and passenger comfort, it's important for safety reasons too. If your windows need defrosting, you'll need heat to keep your windows clear.

4. Lights

As the days get shorter with less daylight, you'll need your lights more frequently. Ensure your lights are all working properly, including the brake lights. If a bulb is broken or out, be sure to replace it.
